Tibet in Transition:
2
Tibet is a region of the world in transition. Particularly Tibet’s nomadic population. According to Xinhua News Agency, about half of Tibet’s 400,000 traditional nomadic households have bid farewell to their only known lifestyle that has lasted 1000’s of years. The remaining 200,000 households now live stranded between their traditional world and the modern one. This time of transition has brought both positive and negative changes. Unfortunately, education & healthcare are often overlooked.

Tailoring Education to Fit Tradition:1

Quality education and healthcare are more important than ever. While it is true that the nomads of Tibet move around often, this is not to say they don’t stay in one place long enough to give their children: teaching and learning can happen in camp or on the road. Normally, nomads don’t moving more than 3 or 4 times a year, ample time for children to get a "semester" of education. However, the social structures of modern Tibet don’t include amenities that favor traditional no lifestyle of the nomads. Education must be made available to nomadic children in a way that suits their lifestyle. Modern Tibetan nomads face unique challenges that have never been known before to their culture.
