Education in a Time of Transition:
In an era when education is becoming more and more important, Tibet’s educational system has neglected certain sectors of the population. In particular, orphans and children from poor or nomadic families and orphans are unable to attend school. Illiteracy among this population is common.

While it is true that the nomads of Tibet move often, this is not to say they do not stay in one place long enough to educate their children. Normally nomads don’t move more than three or four times a year, leaving ample time for children to get a semester of education annually.

Tailoring Education to Fit Tradition:
Quality education and healthcare are more important than ever. While it is true that the nomads of Tibet move around often, this is not to say they don’t stay in one place long enough to give their children: teaching and learning can happen in camp or on the road. Normally, nomads don’t moving more than 3 or 4 times a year, ample time for children to get a "semester" of education. However, the social structures of modern Tibet don’t include amenities that favor traditional no lifestyle of the nomads. Education must be made available to nomadic children in a way that suits their lifestyle. Modern Tibetan nomads face unique challenges that have never been known before to their culture.
TEACH Fund’s Current Focus of Operations:

Sangrima Village and Traling monastery.
Sangrima village, in Dri County of the Golok Prefecture in Amdo Province, is situated high in the high Himalayan Mountains at about 4500 meters above sea level. Among a population of 560 families, 198 of them live below the poverty line. Most property is in the form of livestock, with large herds of yak, sheep & horses. Until TEACH stepped in, there only existed a poorly equipped school, health station & veterinary clinic to service this population.

Sanrima’s primary school was built in 1968. There are 6 teachers, 2 child-care workers and 2 cooks to work with over 100 students of all different ages. In 2006, TEACH undertook its first project:

After a successful fundraising drive that finished up in 2006, TEACH renovated the Sangrima school and equipped the facilities with basic supplies, such as desks, bookshelves & blackboards.
